I am sitting here watching the beautiful snow fall...thinking about what we may have been talking about tonight at MOPS (had we decided to try) and the thing I think I may have asked one or two of you in our conversations is...
What is one gift you can remember that really meant alot to you and you were very surprised to get?
You see my husband's side of the family we are all required to provide "This is what I want for Christmas and this is where you can buy it" lists. Yes. Sad isn't it? The argument is that no one wants to have a failed gift and the line I have heard the past 15 years that I have shared Christmas with this family, "if I am going to buy you a gift I want it to be something that you really want!"
As my family already knows, I hate telling people WHAT I want for Christmas! I do not like providing a list. I want to be surprised! I want you to think about who I am and I want you to get me something that comes from your heart! Am I alone in this? I think I am one of the easiest people in the world to buy for. All I want is something from the heart.
So the past few years I have refused to provide a list. I may have mentioned a few things in passing but unless it is written, no one pays attention. I still receive lists. I cannot say that I have never purchased something off of a list because. . .desperate times call for desperate measures.
So let me rephrase my question:
What is one gift you can remember that really meant alot to you and you were very surprised to get? One NOT ON A LIST...one FROM A HEART?
Years ago my in-laws surprised me with an Anne of Green Gables gift set.
ReplyDeleteIt came with all of the books, the movies, and a doll.
Anne (the doll) had a fall two weeks ago and her hand broke. That was a bad day for me. I was so upset.
This is one of the most special gifts that I ever received (to date) because it was totally from my mother-in-laws heart and I absolutely LOVED it and still do...broken hand and all.
My most special gift came about 11 years ago. Carmen and I had moved back to Pennsylvania and had very little money. What we did have was spent on Lizzy. Without my knowledge, Carm had sold his sports cards. With that money, he purchased a centerpiece. It was so special because he gave it from his heart with not a selfish thought. I still put the centerpiece out today. Actually, it is sitting in my kitchen window as I write this <3
ReplyDeleteI remember two gifts that meant a lot to me. A friend bought me a video series of WWII, which cost her a good bit of money and was exactly what I was very interested in at the time. It was so thoughtful and unexpected, it warmed my heart. The other was a pair of needlepointed pillows that my mom made for me while her back was broken. She stitched them laying on her back for a few months! It was so personal and touching!
ReplyDeleteA gift I especially cherish is a beautiful wooden plant stand that my daughter, Lisa, made in her industrial arts class in high school. Since she made it at school it was a complete surprise to me. I treasure that lovely gift that she made with her own hands! This makes me think of all the other darling handmade gifts my kids have given me, especially the little Christmas ornaments I hang on the tree every year. These all bring back so many happy memories!
